King of Tomorrow

Psalm 90:12
So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.

When we’re worried, we act like today is the only day that matters. We forget all that we have lived through with God, and we forget everything that He still has for us.

All we focus on is the “now” we currently find ourselves in.

(That can be good, healthy, and wise. It’s important to be present, to focus on the tasks we have in front of us.) Jesus even called us to do that in Matthew 6:34“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

BUT there is a problem. When we become so focused on today, our tunnel-vision stops us from seeing all the good that Jesus has done for us, and all the good He still will do for us. All we can see is the problem in front of us. And that’s not how Jesus wants us to live.

In the book of Numbers, we find the Israelites focused on surviving. They had escaped Egypt, and they’ve been walking around the desert. They are ready to conquer the promised land. But then… they find giants. Then they find great walled cities, like Jericho. And most of them get tunnel vision. They start forgetting God’s faithfulness, and His promises for their future.

All they can see is the problem in front of them.

Joshua and Caleb are able to see the big picture; they remember that their God isn’t only the God of yesterday and today, but He is their King of Tomorrow. He reigns not only now, but forevermore.

Exodus 15:18
The LORD shall reign for ever and ever.

The rest of the Israelites aren’t focused on the tomorrow that God has promised them.

They aren’t remembering all the times that God had been faithful previously.

They’re focused on their problems.

And they miss out on what God is doing. By not trusting God for their tomorrow, they lost it. They missed out on the Promised Land! They spent the rest of their lives wandering in circles, leaving the Promised Land for their children to conquer.

I don’t us want to waste the opportunity that God is giving us. We have been called to be light and salt, and I don’t want to leave that task to our children!

Today we can shine, because we know that tomorrow is in God’s hands.

Ephesians 2:10
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

The “good works” that Jesus has prepared for us haven’t dried up. There’s still more for us to do!

Question: Do we truly believe that Christ has a plan for us?

Challenge: Take a moment to write down all the ways that Jesus has been faithful in the past. Remember that He doesn’t change, that He’ll be faithful tomorrow too!
